12th Century to layer 2014

Palazzo della Ragione

The Palazzo della Ragione is a typical public building that was constructed in the 12th century for municipal and commercial needs in Italian medieval cities. The Palazzo della Ragione in Mantova was built on one of the main squares - Piazza delle Erbe and has survived over time due to its form that has proven its vitality with its flexibility of functions. As the City of Mantova changed and grew over the centuries, so too did the Palazzo della Ragione which has signs of additions that can be considered as ‘layers over time’.

Presently the building’s ground level has commercial use while the upper level is used for concerts and exhibitions, lacking real connections between them. The project requirements to provide accessibility to the second level and an emergency staircase are an opportunity to create a stronger connection between the piazza and the upper level.

The underlying concept of additional ‘layers over time’ provides the focus for designing a new contemporary layer which expresses the spirit as well as the modern requirements of the 21st century. The contemporary addition respects the older preceding layers with the planning principles demonstrated in the following diagrams.
